< PreviousPIG.Without papers, it’s just anotherGet the pedigree.A performance pedigree is more than a piece of paper – it’s your word. It says your breeding stock is a superior product backed by superior genetics and predictable performance. It sets purebred producers apart from those who pass common, ordinary pigs off as breeding stock. And, a pedigree is something else. It’s the lifeblood of an entire industry, making it possible for you to have the leadership, research, programs, services and support you’ve come to expect from the National Swine Registry. So, if you’re raising and selling purebreds, you owe it to yourself to register every litter. If you purchase seedstock for your commercial operation, you owe it to yourself to ask for the performance pedigree. Why not take advantage of more than 100 years of genetic selection and performance documentation?2639 Yeager Raod, West Lafayette, IN 47906765.463.3594 • 765.497.2959 faxnsr@nationalswine.com • www.nationalswine.comThoughtsAUGUST 2018 | SEEDSTOCK EDGE9018 Aug SE Form.indd 907/26/2018 2:57:49 PMWithout papers, it’s just anotherThoughtsfrom therayperryman10@yahoo.comshortroundministries.org806.790.9298Hello one and all out there in Seedstock EDGE land. As always, I am honored and humbled to write you in this great publication. In this issue I want to share with you about seasons in our lives. Ecclesiastes chapter 3 tells us that there are times and seasons for everything. We get in trouble when we try to hold on to something or someone that was meant to be in our life only for a season. You see we can forfeit something so much greater when we are not willing to let go of a seasonal thing in our life. We have to know that God is trustworthy and if He is wanting to remove something or someone from our life He will replace it with something far better. Many times we hold on to seasonal things because we have become comfortable with them. We all know we love to be comfortable; however, our destinies will never be realized in our comfort zone. God will use seasons of our life to grow us for the next season. So let’s be willing to follow even when we aren’t comfortable in our season. We love each of you and don’t forget Jesus loves ya bunches. I began my career with John Deere Financial in 2000 and I have held a variety of positions but, for the most part, I have worked with the Sales and Marketing Functions. I am currently the Tactical Sales Manager and my responsibility is to lead our sales organization’s sales planning process and ensure that our sales professionals have the tools and resources they need at the right time in order to execute tasks successfully year-round. Growing up, what career did you imagine yourself in?When I was younger, I had a strong interest in radio and TV broadcasting. I even worked as a radio announcer in both high school and college. Those communications skills have proven essential for every role I’ve held with John Deere. What are your roles within WinMor Farms?I can wear pretty much all of the hats here depending on the time of the year. I do burn a lot of my vacation time during our farrowing seasons as I own the title of Chief Pig Puller. The guys aren’t a lot of help in this area! My dad lives at our main farm and he owns much of the day-to-day responsibilities including the feeding and care of the animals. We are a team when it comes to selling and breeding decisions although he is the one who ends up doing most of the actual hands-on breeding unless we are working with a large number and then I’m called in to assist. I am the note and record keeper and I handle all of our marketing, social media and online sales. What made you decide to continue running WinMor Farms, while also having a career with John Deere? When I began my career after graduating from college, I didn’t have a plan to re-enter the showpig business. I really thought that chapter was over for me. I was fi ve to six years into my career and marriage before the opportunity opened up again. My dad called me one day and proposed that we buy three females and leave it at that…just a small side hobby. Then, over time, that sow number grew to 12, 25 and 40. We are now over 100 sows which has always been a healthy tension between me and my dad. I’d like to reduce our numbers and allow us a little more time to breathe but, so far, things have worked out well for us even at these numbers and we’ve been able to produce enough showpigs each year to meet customer demand. So, to answer your question, if I’d known where that phone call 12 years ago would have led to today…maybe I wouldn’t have answered!!What is one major challenge you have experienced in your career(s)? How did you overcome it?There have been several challenges over the years but I’ve always felt very fortunate to work for John Deere Financial. I’ve always been surrounded by great people and they make it fun to come to work each day. Managing through the economic downturns and the fi nancial crisis nine to 10 years ago are memorable for me. I’ve learned that no matter how low things seem, our business is cyclical and the better times will always re-surface. Right now, we are working with so many younger farmers who haven’t experienced what their dads or grandfathers have been through and that has led to some memorable and challenging conversations in the past several months. My family is the center of everything I do and if I’ve had a bad day at work, coming home to my family and spending an evening in the show barn or the farrowing house changes my mood in an instant. What is a piece of advice you would give young women trying to make their own mark in the agriculture industry? There is no better place than agriculture for women who bring a passion to the industry. My advice is to always be yourself and remember where you came from. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and admit what you don’t know. Commit to being a life-long learner. Create your own network of young men and women who share your enthusiasm for agriculture and great things will follow.Jennifer SlagleWinMor Farms93AUGUST 2018 | SEEDSTOCK EDGE18 Aug SE Form.indd 937/26/2018 3:10:10 PMGibson GirlsA TRUE A THLE TE!Short Fuse x HarbaughAUGUST 2018 | SEEDSTOCK EDGE9418 Aug SE Form.indd 947/26/2018 3:10:15 PMGibson GirlsGibson Girls4480 RT 22 WEST, CIRCLEVILLE, OH 43113740.571.6226reg# 499295002A TRUE A THLE TE!Short Fuse x HarbaughBred by Mike WatsonSemen $200/doseRES.
