While there I was on the livestock judging team. I fi nished my college education at Purdue University where I also judged livestock. I graduated from Purdue with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education. What is your professional background? Shaffer’s Goldrush is my family’s boar stud, in Albany, Indiana. I work with my family, but I focus on semen sales. I am also a co-owner in Walton Webcasting where I manage Stock Center. My husband, Kyle, and I also operate Pullen Showpigs. We focus on producing purebred Duroc breeding stock and showpigs for 4-H and FFA members. Growing up, what career did you imagine yourself in?Growing up, I knew I always wanted to remain a part of Shaffer’s Goldrush, but I didn’t think it would be full-time. My main professional goal was to impact young people in agriculture so I wanted to be an Ag teacher. What is your role at Shaffer’s Goldrush and at Walton Webcasting? At Shaffer’s Goldrush my main job is semen sales. It is a family farm so it is all hands on deck. I also help with A.I. certifi cates, litter registrations and anything that needs done. With Walton Webcasting my main responsibility is to oversee Stock Center and I produce Stock Center News How do you balance your two careers, raising a family and raising livestock? I have an awesome husband. We genuinely work as a team. We also have a great family support system. They always pitch in to help. I made it my mission that when we started a family that our kids would grow up in the family business. I take them with me wherever I go whether it is to the family farm or to the Walton Studio. How does it feel being the fi rst woman on the NSR Executive Committee?I feel very blessed and it is a huge honor but with that comes a huge responsibility. I do feel that our industry tries to be as inclusive and accepting of everyone as possible. From that aspect, I truly appreciate my fellow board members, but I know our experiences are different. I try to bring a unique perspective to the table. It is my goal that myself and future female board members are seen not just as women on the board but that we provide positive contributions to the progression of this organization. I also want to blaze a path for more women to have more leadership roles in agriculture. What is one major challenge you have experienced in your career(s)? And how did you overcome it? Trying to accomplish all your professional goals while raising a family is challenging. To balance it all, it requires crazy work hours and multitasking. It is not uncommon for me to send emails at 2 a.m., or be farrowing out a sow but also teaching my sons about pig breeds. Honestly, sometimes my career goals do get put on the back burner because my family is my number one priority. Having a good daily routine plus a great husband who wants me to succeed helps a tremendous amount. I also rely on prayer and letting God lead me toward what needs to be a focus in my life. What is a piece of advice you would give young women trying to make their own mark in the agriculture industry? Always stand your ground and be confi dent in your abilities. Often times young women are hard on themselves and are self-conscious. By giving yourself grace regarding your weaknesses but identifying your strengths and capitalizing on them you can accomplish more. You have to center yourself around your talents instead of focusing on your shortcomings. It is also incredibly important to surround yourself with good people who support your goals, and then in return you need to support their successes.Lynsee Shaffer PullenShaffer’s Goldrush and Walton Webcasting99SEPTEMBER 2018 | SEEDSTOCK EDGE18 Sept SE Form.indd 998/23/2018 8:47:39 PMNext >
