TALENT ACQUISITION AND RETENTION – The adage we have all heard that goes, “Good help is hard to fi nd,” continues to ring true in the pork industry. Not only is this imperative to how we approach developing our NJSA members to become highly marketable employees, but also how we develop and retain talent at the National Swine Registry. Breed association work is not the most glamorous work at times; long hours, challenging tasks and people, and conservative budgets are not the most appealing to young talent. Bottom line, we are not Google or Amazon; there are no millennial nap stations or espresso machines at the NSR. Joking aside, we must adapt to the changing workforce to insure we have the best human resources possible and our employees feel fulfi lled daily. While this is listed as number fi ve on the list, our people are our most important asset. As a membership and organization, we cannot take them for granted. This editorial is not meant to be a manifesto or a declaration, but rather just my personal views and vision for the future. The NSR is blessed to have had many successes over the years, but this has not come without challenges. I would be honored to listen to your views on these ideas, and of course, your own. I wish you much success as we move into the harvest and fall shows and sales season, and hope we as an organization continue to demonstrate our motto daily; Proven. Progressive. Purebreds. Growing up, I was heavily involved in 4-H and FFA, as well as other youth organizations. I attended Black Hawk East and Iowa State University where I was a contrib-uting member of both livestock judging teams and obtained my degree in animal science. My brother and I have been fortunate to show hogs at local, state and national shows over the years and our main focus at Keppy Showpigs has been to raise competi-tive Hampshires and crossbreds for youth to exhibit across the country. I currently work as a Showfeed Specialist for MoorMan’s ShowTec and I feel very fortunate I get to work with youth and livestock on a regular basis, whether it’s with my job, selling pigs, or judging a show. Q: What are you looking for in your champion bar-row and gilt?Build, balance, and good feet and legs are things we can’t do with a feed bucket and never seem to go out of style. Q: What advice do you have for young people in the livestock industry? My best piece of advice for young people in the live-stock industry would be to stay focused, set goals, surround yourself with good people and most im-portantly, do you. You can do anything you set your mind to if the work, want and will is there. Jim Gibson, Iowa2018 NBS® Junior ClassicQ: What is your favorite show to attend? All of the shows we attend as a family are enjoyable because of the great people involved. We always enjoy the Iowa State Fair because of the history our family has with the fair and the great friends we are able to reunite with each year. We also enjoy the Iowa Swine Jackpot Series Grand Finale because of the family atmosphere and the opportunity to see youth be rewarded for a season’s worth of work. I enjoy the National Barrow Show for its great history and traditions that are an integral part of the pure-bred swine industry. Q: What is one important trait young individuals can gain from showing? Respect. Respect for the amount of work it takes to be successful. Respect for the skill, ability and opinion of others. Respect for the support of family and friends who help you participate and succeed in the show ring. Respect for the great opportunity you have to show livestock. Q: If you could tell every exhibitor one thing what would it be?Feed, train and show every pig like it is a great one. Not every barrow or gilt will turn out, but taking pride in making the most of your project will give you the best results. 57SEPTEMBER 2018 | SEEDSTOCK EDGE18 Sept SE Form.indd 578/23/2018 8:45:56 PMENTRY INFORMATION • Entry fees for all entries must accompany the respective entry form. • All entries must be postmarked by Oct. 3, 2018. • All late entries will be charged double the regular entry fees.
