< PreviousTell us about your position? As a production analysist I help producers evaluate both the data they are collecting from their farm, as well as the processes they are using within the farm. I also assist them in fi ne tuning procedures to generate better performance. Tell us about your experience working with producers. When I work with producers the fi rst thing I do is evaluate their production data and look at the performance of the farm and where the biggest opportunities are in improving both production performance but especially fi nancial performance. Then the data is reviewed with the producer in a written report, as well as discussion of how to make improvements take place. In some cases this also includes visits to the farms to work with the staff as well. The SMS reports are able to be translated into multiple languages as we work with producers around the world. Technology continues to improve Production AnalysistValerie Duttlingerallowing communication to be easier with those a half a world away and not require the travel to the farms like it once did. One thing that is the same for producers around the world is they are all working to feed their families, their community, and the world. The challenges in China for example aren’t really all that different from the ones that producers face in the USA, feed is still the highest cost, diseases are challenging, and there is a shortage of people with animal knowledge and skills. What is your favorite aspect of your job? The producers I work with; they are passionate about what they are doing, they want to improve, learn and be more effi cient. What’s advice you would give to young women wanting to pursue a career in your fi eld? Diversify in both education and internships, learn as much as you can about pigs, businesses and people. Don’t be afraid of dreaming big or working hard. I never dreamt that growing up on a pig farm would lead me to where I am today.Valerie Duttlinger grew up on a purebred seedstock farm in Gentryville, Indiana. From a young age, Duttlinger was always in the barns and working with the pigs. After graduating high school, Duttlinger attended Purdue University and received a degree in animal science. She later returned to her family’s farm. Her and her husband, Ben, have two sons- Blake, 13 and Jace, 11. In June 2016, Duttlinger started with Swine Management Services as a production analysist. Swine Management Services is a leading supplier of ‘information solutions’ and processes data for over 50,000 sows each week. The company provides data analysis through their data base, which includes more than 800 farms and around 1,500,000 sows. Duttlinger is passionate about helping producers improve and remain competi-tive in the industry.
