During the National Swine Registry Executive Committee Meeting in March 2019, two innovative and exciting services were proposed and approved.
Effective July 1, 2019, the NSR will offer crossbred boar DNA banking and crossbred litter recording services to its members. These services will be completely voluntary and are an opportunity to provide NSR members with increasingly high demand resources. Additionally, these services are an integral part of the NSR’s Long Range Strategic Plan.
Yes, if you plan to submit crossbred boar DNA for banking, you must submit his (published) name, ear notch, sire, maternal grandsire, date of birth, breeder, current owner and stress status so the boar can be registered with the NSR and issued a unique registration number. There will be a fee to register and DNA bank the boar.
No, DNA banking and registration are two different services. You do have to register a crossbred boar in order to bank DNA, but do not have to bank DNA in order to register it.
Yes, you can submit the sows name, ear notch, sire, maternal grandsire, date of birth, breeder and current owner to register your female.
The fee to register a crossbred boar is $20 per head. The fee to register a crossbred female or barrow is $10. If you wish to bank DNA on crossbred animals the fee is $6 per sample.
DNA banking your crossbred boars provides an independent third-party bank of samples for future DNA testing, such as parentage verification.
The value of registering your crossbred animals provides an independent third-party verification of lineage, providing certified crossbred genetics and documented crossbred genetics to more accurately determine an animal’s true genetic worth.
At this time, we are focused on recording crossbred boars and sows to build the crossbred “breed” database. Litter recording services for crossbreds will be offered after sufficient base animals are established in the database.
