< PreviousTo the Active Members of the National Swine RegistryIt is my pleasure to present the following information as a combined annual report of the National Swine Registry, an LLC partnership comprised of the American Yorkshire Club, Hampshire Swine Registry, United Duroc Swine Registry and the American Landrace Association. This marks the 19th year that all four breeds have operated under the NSR umbrella, as the American Landrace Association offi cially joined on Jan. 1, 1998. The Yorkshire, Duroc and Hampshire associations each represent a 30 percent interest in the fi nancial affairs of the NSR, while Landrace are represented at 10 percent. Collectively, these four breeds represent more than 80 percent of the purebred hog registrations in the country and are incorporated into the breeding schemes utilized by commercial swine production throughout the world. The lifeblood of this organization is the result of the dedication and commitment demonstrated by the members recognized in this report. In this report, you will fi nd a listing of the top junior and senior recorders for each breed, as well as the top STAGES™ recorders and state activity comparisons. Our STAGES™ genetic evaluation program continues to grow, with records in excess of 2.5 million. The international markets are an intricate part of our membership, and we look forward to new opportunities in coming years. The National Junior Swine Association (NJSA), currently, has more than 13,850 members from 45 states plus three countries, and is recognized as one of the largest youth organizations in animal agriculture. The Seedstock EDGE is recognized as one of the leading publications in the livestock industry and offers an outstanding venue for the membership to promote their genetic programs and services. The structure of the National Swine Registry is such that nearly all the income and expenses accrue to and fl ow through the organization. Therefore, this report includes an income and expense report for the NSR but only the balance sheets for each of the individual breed associations. The American Yorkshire Club, Hampshire Swine Registry and United Duroc Swine Registry each contributed $150,000 to the initial formation of the NSR, while the American Landrace Association contributed $50,000. The breed’s equity in the NSR is adjusted each year, depending on the profi t or loss experienced by the NSR. In addition to their equity in the NSR, each breed still maintains their own investment portfolio of cash reserves and are refl ected on the balance sheet for each of the associations. As you can see, the NSR experienced a positive cash position in 2017. Several key staff members left our employment in 2017. We were blessed to have found several outstanding individuals that will contribute to future endeavors at the NSR. The talented individuals who make up the NSR staff have the desire to make a difference within the pedigreed swine industry. With a dedicated membership and staff, we will continue to develop programs and opportunities that benefi t the NSR/NJSA membership in upcoming years.Your NSR Executive Committee has aggressively pursued and endorsed changes in the NSR operating structure, and wants input and suggestions from you – the membership. We invite you to share any comments and/or concerns you may have about programs, services or information presented throughout this report.Sincerely,Michael A. APRIL/MAY 2018 | SEEDSTOCK EDGE5818 AprilMay SE Form.indd 584/4/2018 9:29:18 AMThe 2018 Winter Type Conference in Perry, Georgia, was one that had great weather and a record shatter-ing number of entries. This show continues to grow every year and is becoming a must-attend event. The Duroc portion of this year’s show was full of outstanding females and a really strong, competitive boar show. The judge at this year’s event was Brock Her-ren, Oklahoma. Brock is an outstanding young breeder and did a great job judging his fi rst na-tional show. This writer is pretty certain we’ll see more of him in the future. Thank you! Well done!Col. Kevin Wendt was once more the auctioneer for this year’s event. As always, he continues to be one of the very best at his craft. Thanks, Colonel! As usual, we began Saturday night’s sale with the presentation of the Premier and Reserve Premier Sire awards. This year’s Premier Sire was RYNK5 War Paint 1-5 owned by Hi Point Genetics, Illinois. The Reserve Premier Sire was ESSP5 Steel Pipe 1-1 owned by Purple Power Boar Stud, Indiana. Congratulations to these two owners for winning these very coveted awards. We began the sale with the champion boar. Com-ing out of class 2 earlier in the day, this boar was con-signed by Goff Select Swine Genetics, Indiana. This son of BG6 Band of Outlaws 36-1 is so correct in all the areas that are important. He is sound, stout, really square made and certainly looked like a boar when he came right at you. He topped the sale at $775 and went back to Indiana with Tegan Walker. Great buy here.Cale Dyson’s class 4 winner was the reserve cham-pion. Sired by RZN5 Fire Away 20-7, this guy has a bunch of feature and opened up into a big chest fl oor and upper rib. This boar also made his way back to Indiana with Josh Jacobi at a price of $600.This year’s class 1 winner was shown by the Wehmeier fi rm, Indiana. A son of BEYE3 Dif-ferent Deal 45-3, this young boar is stout and correct with a good amount of muscle. Kuhlow Girls from Wisconsin had the class 3 winner. Sired by the Premier Sire, this boar is as good looking as any in the barn. His shape, struc-ture and skeletal correctness made this one a great buy for RAR Genetics, Iowa, at $400.Tyler Waechter, Jordan Schippert, Thomas Trout, and Bryson Stickler all had nice boars that came in later and all found good homes. We led the gilt portion of the sale off with the re-serve champion of the NJSA Southeast Regional show held on Friday. Taylor Barber, Georgia, was the owner of this female. Her look, femininity, extension and stout-ness made this daughter of IZF6 Cheap Money 2-5 a great buy for Brent Bolen, Illinois, at $2,300.Next up was champion of the open show and the winner of class 7. Aiden Wilhelmy’s, Ohio, entry is mega stout, huge ribbed and as opened up and true off both ends as you can make one. Sired by SCFG5 World Class 97-10, this gilt made a long trip back to Oklahoma with the judge for $3,200. Thanks for stepping up, Brock.Colton and Landyn Cooper, Indiana, had the re-serve champion with their winner of class 6. Sired by KTB6 Watch ‘N Learn 6-3, this gilt is a fault free, correct gilt with all the basics. She stayed in Geor-gia with Southern Select Show Pigs at $575.Taylor Schuerman, Indiana, was next with her HP6 He Is What He Is 63-2 daughter. The winner of class 1 earlier in the day, this one is a lady. So attractive and well bal-anced when on the move, she combines those things with a really square build and excellent bone. She was Brent Bolen’s second purchase of the day at $1,600.Courtney Conine, Georgia, won class 4 and was next in line. A littermate to the sale starter that was reserve champion in the NJSA show, this one proved to be quite popular. This one is moderate, really opened up into a big chest fl oor and had a massive ribcage and top. Put these things on a skeleton that could go all day and you’ve got the top-selling gilt at $4,000. She’s headed to Indiana with Shaffer’s Goldrush, Indiana. Audrey Rice, Indiana, had the class 8 winner. Sired by CDO6 He’s It 215-2, this gal is a bigger framed female with an immense body cavity and still man-aged to have plenty of muscle and width with a great set of feet and legs. She’s going back to In-diana with Purple Power Boar Stud at $2,600. Nelson Hanson, California was next with his class 2 winner. A daughter of HAT5 Hill All Good 16-3, this one is basic, complete and well balanced. This one is headed south to Florida with Clevic Selph for $200.The class 3 winner was shown by Connor and Cagney Utterback, Indiana. The winner of class 5 was exhibited by Landin Crummey, Georgia. There were several other nice gilts throughout the sale order.
