It is always a pleasure to go spend time in Georgia to visit with great people and take part in what is becoming the fastest growing junior show of the year. This year, we had the pleasure watching Garry Childs, Georgia, judge the Hampshire portion of the WTC. It’s always fun to watch Garry and hear his per-spective on breeding hogs and the industry. I thought we had a nice offering of Hamps. There weren’t a ton of numbers, but a good set did show up in Perry. The Premier Sire award for the second type confer-ence in a row went to JSE6 Trump Card 118-2 owned by West Texas Boar Stud, Texas, and Steve & Derek Earnhart, Indiana. This herdsire has really come out of the gate swinging. He has sired good hogs and high sellers at the last two NSR events. I know if you talk to Russ or the Earnhart crew, they have a lot of faith in this boar, and he is proving his worth. Congratulations to Upperhand Genetics, Indiana, on owning the Reserve Premier Sire, TPSP5 Believe The Hype 69-1. Believe The Hype has been one of the very popular boars the last few seasons. This boar’s pedigree is packed with some of the win-ningest genetics over the last few years and has made a name for himself in the showpig world. Congrats to both fi rms on a pair of high-quality Hampshire boars. This year’s Champion Hampshire Boar went to Earl L. Cain & Family, Iowa, with their son of EC6 Thunderman 51-5, the very popular Thunderstruck son that is housed at Cain Super Sires. The Cain boar is the class 2 winner that caught Garry’s attention right out of the gate. He is a good designed boar that met the green carpet with a heavy duty set of feet and legs. Plus, his look from the side reads like a modern day herdsire without giving up the stoutness, forearm and skull it takes to make prog-ress. His shape up high is genuine and appropriate for his frame size, bold body shape and feature. JW Wilson, North Carolina, will give him a shot in his breeding program, and I’m sure we will hear about him again.George & Mike Watson, Indiana, drove the reserve champion boar. Mike’s boar is a son of GMW6 Keep Sake 8-4. I’m sure many of you have heard of Keep Sake. He is the popular off-the-farm purchase from Watson to Hi Point Genetics, Illinois. The shape to his body, his attractive head and face and fl exible skel-eton reads to me like he would be a good sire to make competitive gilts and show barrows. Congrats to the Watson family on another banner at a type conference.Chad Mauck, Indiana, drove the Champion Hamp-shire Gilt with the class 2 winning daughter of LLG4 Locksmith 31-3. The dam side of Chad’s gilt goes back to a BOLN4 Man Amongst Boys sow. I thought the Mauck gilt put a lot of positives together. She’s a good skeleton gilt that covered the ring with fl ex and com-fort, and she had an attractive look from the side, while still looking like a generator with a shot more jaw and substance than some. On top, her blade is opened up allowing her forerib shape and boldness of body to be second to none. Going away she reads like a female with a good hindleg and sure looks like she would be easy to mate to a wide variety of boars. Congrats to Chad on a tremendous example of a Hampshire female.Paxton Peacock, Alabama, brought this year’s Reserve Champion Hampshire Gilt and winner of class 3. Her pedigree reads CFLK6 TCG Stranded 5-1 x KORB4 All Eyes 23-7. She’s a really fundamentally good gilt with a sought after pedigree. Plus, an upheaded look is the image she gives from the side. Her angles and skeleton lay in her the right way, all while working as much power and dimension you want in a female. I think this gilt really represents some quality, and congratulations to Paxton with his success.Maci Scher, Indiana, won class 1 Hampshire gilts with a BOLN5 Carried Away 14-6 x BOLN1 Homemade 17-3 gilt. Maci’s gilt put a lot of positives together. Her blade width, upper rib and bulk to her center body is unrivaled. She is a heavy structured gilt with plenty of bone to go along with her upper skeleton. While going away, this gilt leaves with a square pin set and plenty of power.Earl L. Cain & Family, Iowa, drove the class 4 win-ner with another EC6 Thunderman 51-5 sired pig. The Cain gilt looks so much like a Hampshire breed-ing gilt needs to. She had all the things Hampshire are known for in terms of stoutness, a great rib cage, attractive look and a sound set of running gear. My favorite part about her includes her feminine feature. Her underline is good, and her head looks like a lady. Her presence from the side is as good as any. The class 5 winner went to Shaffer’s Goldrush, Indi-ana. Aimee drove her way to beating her younger sister in a high-quality class of Hamp gilts. The Shaffer gilt is sired by GRUS5 Here I Am 28-2 and out of a NAJO5 GRUS The Game 12-5 sow. That pedigree alone has been responsible for several champions the last couple of years, and this is a high-quality gilt. At the ground, she is secure and comfortable on the carpet. Her skull shape matches her bone and up high is the same story. This gilt is square in her width, works off a good hindleg and sure looks like one that could help out a sow herd.As always, I would like to thank everyone who came and supported the Winter Type Conference in Perry, Georgia. We couldn’t have these events without the great support from the breeders and buyers. Thanks to Kevin Wendt, Ohio, for doing a professional job with the auctioneering duties, as well as the entire staff at the fairgrounds for making us welcome. We are looking forward to a great 2018 and wish you all the best of luck and safe travels.Blaine Evans | blaine@nationalswine.comNSR Field RepresentativeFrom the Field63APRIL/MAY 2018 | SEEDSTOCK EDGE18 AprilMay SE Form.indd 634/4/2018 10:27:12 AMHampshire Boar Show ResultsBOARS CLASS 1 HampshirePlaceLot No.ExhibitorENSireDam's SireBuyerSale Price118-1George & Mike Watson, IN4-7GMW6 KEEP SAKE 8-4GMW2 LVS BLACK LIGHTNING 10-3 No Sale29247-11Chad Mauck, IN9-1LLG4 LOCKSMITH 31-3BOLN4 MAN AMONGST BOYS 23-3 No Sale3125-1Kyle Tormoehlen, IN3-6BAAD6 HOT START 88-6SRF4 SGLD THE REVEREND 6-7Jacob Eve & Ashtin Franks, IN$52549156-11Brice Harker, IN9-6DWGR6 TIME WARP 2-3MVLS0 LONG TIME COMING 12-1 No Sale59061-11Calle Cauley, GA1-2BAAD6 HOT START 88-6JLM9 TCG AUGUSTA 18-1 No SaleBOARS CLASS 2 HampshirePlaceLot No.ExhibitorENSireDam's SireBuyerSale Price15-1Earl L Cain & Family, IA126-1 EC6 THUNDERMAN 51-5JMJG5 CARRY OUT 7-8J W Wilson, NC$1,050224-2Steve&derek Earnhart Families, IN122-5 JSE6 TRUMP CARD 118-2BOLN3 POINT MAKER 72-7Clevic Selph, FL$400324-1Steve&derek Earnhart Families, IN121-1 JSE6 TRUMP CARD 118-2JSE5 DREAM SQUASHER 37-1Noel Farms & Ira Moore, IN$500477-2Braxton Funkhouser, IN3-4JSE6 MAN AMONGST BOYS 73-6BOLN1 POINT MAKER 118-3 No Sale59275-11Joe Dan Mitchell, GA1-4DPK5 GRUS EYE CANDY 14-1KMRE3 HAYMAKER 11-5 No SaleHampshire Gilt Show ResultsOPEN GILTS CLASS 1 HampshirePlaceLot No.ExhibitorENSireDam's SireBuyerSale Price19348-2Maci Scher, IN14-4BOLN5 CARRIED AWAY 14-6BOLN1 HOMEMADE 17-3Maci Scher, IN$25029119-2Cale Dyson, IN3-6JSE6 TRUMP CARD 118-2CFLK3 NO DEBATE 14-5Seth Downing, OH$32539134-2Hope/gracie/reagan Flaspohler, IN15-5RRPA6 HI WATER 2-2ASP4 PROTOTYPE 3-1Erica Dupaul, FL$50049191-2Griffi n & Eric Huneycutt, NC14-7JL5 SPLASH 47-3AAHH3 GRUS OUTLAW 27-3 No Sale59156-1Brice Harker, IN9-4DWGR6 TIME WARP 2-3MVLS0 LONG TIME COMING 12-1 No SaleOPEN GILTS CLASS 2 HampshirePlaceLot No.ExhibitorENSireDam's SireBuyerSale Price19247-10Chad Mauck, IN9-4LLG4 LOCKSMITH 31-3BOLN4 MAN AMONGST BOYS 23-3Tim Mauck, IN$2,70029001-3Ayden Adams, OH24-4CFLK6 TCG STOP THE MADNESS2MFF4 OVER TIME 7-7 No Sale39030-1Lauren Blake, GA9-2LLG4 LOCKSMITH 31-3BOLN4 MAN AMONGST BOYS 23-3Heartland Sires Llc, OH$40049329-1Drew Rice, IN7-3TPSP5 BELIEVE THE HYPE 69-1JJG4 RAISE EM UP 27-1 No Sale59181-1Moriah Or Jw Hitchcock, GA85-6RLR6 RANGE WARS 16-2JLM3 CARRY ON 21-1Jim & Mike Mccoy, OH$525OPEN GILTS CLASS 3 HampshirePlaceLot No.ExhibitorENSireDam's SireBuyerSale Price19309-1Paxton Peacock, AL23-5CFLK6 TCG STRANDED 5-1KORB4 ALL EYES 23-7Hirschfeld Livestock, NE$1,80029376-1Cade & Noah Sponcil, OH4-10NAJO5 TCG NEW RECRUIT 12-9JJG4 RAISE EM UP 27-1Erica Dupaul, FL$1,050377-3Braxton Funkhouser, IN4-8FNKA5 CARRY ON 15-1FNKA3 POINT MAKER 5-3 No Sale49365-2Baylee Sliger, IN87-3JGR3 REACH 1-10AAHH3 MEET YOUR MAKER 2-3 No Sale5114-2Malia & Lilly Quesenberry, OH6-3BOLN5 CARRIED AWAY 14-6BOLN3 POINT MAKER 21-10 No SaleOPEN GILTS CLASS 4 HampshirePlaceLot No.ExhibitorENSireDam's SireBuyerSale Price15-6Earl L Cain & Family, IA121-9 EC6 THUNDERMAN 51-5FSF3 CLYDESDALE 12-2Ayden Adams, OH$1,300224-4Steve&derek Earnhart Families, IN124-7 JSE6 TRUMP CARD 118-2JSE2 OZ 54-5Paul & Mary Grace Oliver, GA$3,60039323-20Luke Prill, KS17-11 TPSP5 BELIEVE THE HYPE 69-1BOLN4 NO DEBATE 18-8Bs Showpigs, IN$32549155-1Nelson Hanson, CA17-8TPSP5 BELIEVE THE HYPE 69-1BOLN4 NO DEBATE 18-8Cason Edenfi eld, GA$22559323-1Luke Prill, KS17-9TPSP5 BELIEVE THE HYPE 69-1BOLN4 NO DEBATE 18-8Tim Sisson, FL$200OPEN GILTS CLASS 5 HampshirePlaceLot No.ExhibitorENSireDam's SireBuyerSale Price125-2Shaff ers Gold Rush, IN76-4GRUS5 GRUS HERE I AM 28-2NAJO5 GRUS THE GAME 12-5Mitchell Concannon, IN$900225-3Shaff ers Gold Rush, IN76-6GRUS5 GRUS HERE I AM 28-2NAJO5 GRUS THE GAME 12-5Mitchell Concannon, IN$9003106-1Noel Farms, IN25-5DHS6 BARN TALK 15-3HH1 WALK THIS WAY 95-3Tim Sisson, FL$32549429-2Miles Williamson, GA79-7AAHH3 GRUS OUTLAW 27-3GRUS2 GRUS COUNTRY CLUB 18-3Miles Williamson, GA$325515-5David Martin, IA33-1CODS5 SCORE BOARD 12-1JGR3 REACH 1-10Mitchell Farms, GA$225APRIL/MAY 2018 | SEEDSTOCK EDGE6418 AprilMay SE Form.indd 644/4/2018 9:29:25 AMBIG THINGSARE COMING.06.03.1818 AprilMay SE Form.indd 654/4/2018 9:29:25 AMSALE TOTAL: $6,425 | 1 BOAR AVG. $400 | 9 GILTS AVG. $669Champion Landrace Boar & Class 1 WinnerKORB5 HAMMER FIST 11-1 x WCMP3 SHARK TANK 2-2Shown by Lance & Mitchell Westcamp, OhioSold to Cason Edenfi eld, Ga., for $400.Reserve Champion Landrace Boar & 2nd Class 1PCHS6 MAYHEM 21-3 x KORB2 REVOLUTION 12-2Shown by Burkhalter Showpigs, Ind.LANDRACEPremier Sire – PCHS6 MAYHEM 21-3Owned by Crossroads Genetics, Ind. This show has quickly became a must-attend event for our breeders and National Junior Swine Association members. Record-shattering numbers greeted us upon our arrival. There may have been an empty pen in that barn, but I don’t know where it was! While not huge in numbers, the Landrace show was full of good hogs highlighted by a really deep gilt show. The Landrace show was very capably judged by arguably the biggest champion for purebreds in the southeast U.S. Garry Childs has served our industry in almost every facet, from a former fi eld rep to a breeder, a nationally renowned judge, a boar stud owner, etc. He has been a proud voice for this industry and is widely respected by anyone involved in it. He has also been very infl uential and a part of the tremendous growth in this industry for the southeast part of the country. I for one am very proud and honored to call him a friend and want to thank him for another great job.We started the Landrace show with class 1 gilts. Kayla Toenyes, Illinois, led this class off with her daughter of PCHS6 Mayhem 21-3. This one is wide at the ground with good balance and extra muscle. Later that night she went to Indiana with young Maci Scher for $800.Gabby Line, Indiana, was the winner of class 2. This daughter of PCHS6 Mayhem 21-3 would later be named champion by Judge Childs. She is as opened up as any shown and combined this with great fl exibility and a heavy skeleton and shape up high. She got a great home with C&C Showpigs and is headed to the Sunshine State at $1,100. The class 3 winner and Reserve Champion Landrace Gilt was driven by Mackenzie Hoddup from Indiana. Sired by MFUG6 GRUS Silverado 10-3, this gal is way stout. She combines this with a very fl exible build, width and shape coming and going. She commanded the top-selling price of $1,650 that night going to Meeker Durocs, Illinois.Other really nice gilts in the sale were shown by Cale Dyson, Ava Lynn Cravey, and` Cade and Noah Sponcil. There were just two boars shown this year, but they were really nice hogs. The class winner and champion were shown by Lance and Mitchell Westcamp, Ohio. This son of KORB5 Hammer Fist 11-1 was a level made, long fronted boar with good shape. The second and reserve champion was the Burkhalter entry from Indiana sired by PCHS6 Mayhem 21-3. He is a bigger framed boar with look and a correct skeleton. He made a good reserve champion. The Premier Sire at this year’s show was PCHS6 May-hem 21-3 owned by Crossroads Genetics, Indiana. The Reserve Premier Sire was CNTM6 He’s Got It 7-12 owned by Upperhand Genetics, In-diana. If you have never made the trip, I would encour-age you to add it to your 2019 show schedule. The Yorkshire breed batted cleanup for the pure-bred shows this year. Garry Childs, Georgia, was tasked with making the sale order for the mother breed at this year’s event. It’s always enjoyable to watch a true-Yorkshire enthusiast sort through a solid set of hogs. Thank you, Garry, for your honest thoughts on this set.The Yorkshire Premier Sire was, RWG6 Gas Money 112-1, owned by Upperhand Genetics, Indiana. The Reserve Yorkshire Premier Sire was, ACGF6 News Flash 65-3, owned by Moyer Genetic Edge, Ohio. This year’s champion boar was exhibited by Hope, Gracie and Reagan Flaspohler, Indiana. Their boar is sired by ACGF6 News Flash 65-3. This July 1 boar was stout skulled, heavy boned and big bladed. He is tall at the point of his shoulder, strong topped and correct in the angles to his hip and hind leg. He is a boar that has plenty of muscle and a great look from the side. He sold to Shaffer’s Goldrush, Indiana, for $8,000.The reserve champion boar came from Wichita, Kan-sas, with Luke Prill. Luke’s boar is a medium framed hog and taller fronted, while being wide chested and SOUND footed. This guy is great from the profi le, while still being very muscular in his kind. This son of RIY5 Capital Gain 72-1 will make his way to Ohio, with Top Choice Genetics and Wynn Farms. They paid $1,000 to load him on their trailer.Next in the ring was Coast to Coast Showpigs, North Carolina, with their class winning entry from the youngest class. This son of OTTN6 Eldorado 154-6 is athletic. The way this guy’s skeleton is made is correct; he never took a bad step. Plus, he is tall fronted, attractive and has a great look. He sold to Tegan Walker, Indiana, for $1,350.We had a great set of females in Perry this year. We started the gilt sale with the champion in the junior show exhibited by Savannah Page, Georgia. She is sired by ACGF6 New Flash 65-3. This lady was wide in her skeleton, soft middled and had muscle to spare. Plus, she is correct on her feet and legs and had a feminine look from the side. Chad Day, Indi-ana, paid $1,800 to take this gilt home with him.Next up was the reserve champion from the junior show exhibited by James Wyatt Marshall, Virginia, with his daughter of RSY6 Amped Up 4-1. This female is re-ally hard to pick a hole in. She is correct in her angles, sound in motion, and square at both ends and has muscle. She also sold to Chad Day, Indiana, for $2,600.The Champion Yorkshire Gilt was exhibited by Hope, Gracie and Reagan Flaspohler, Indiana. This daughter of ACGF6 News Flash 65-3 is a littermate to their champion boar. She looks like a Yorkshire gilt should. She is tall fronted, feminine, sound, square at the ground, has muscle shape, and is good in her rib. She sold to Carl Wheeler, Ohio, for $2,000.Eric Putnak, Pennsylvania, exhibited the reserve champion gilt at the 2018 WTC. Eric’s gilt is sired by RWG6 Gas Money 112-1, and let me say this gilt is correct. She is great in her design, tall at the point of her shoulder and square on her feet and legs. She’s just a really correctly balanced gilt that is powerful in her muscle. She sold to Brent Bolen, Illinois, for $3,000.Maddie Dishman, Indiana, was up next with her class 6 winning entry sired by TBRO5 Reach 69-1. This is one feminine designed lady. She’s tall fronted, long necked and refi ned about her head. Plus, she’s long bodied and level made. She will go to work for AJ Williams, Indiana, for $2,100.The class 3 winning entry was exhibited by Justin Daniel, Georgia. Justin’s gilt is sired by ACGF6 News Flash 65-3. She is square built, wide centered and has plenty of muscle. She sold to Frank Morgan Jr., Georgia, for $450.Cade and Noah Sponcil, Ohio, drove the winning entry in class 2. This daughter of RIY5 Capital Gain 72-1 is correct on the go, great from the side and square as she leaves you. She sold for $525 to Tabitha Rue, Tennessee. The winning entry from class 4 made her way to the ring next and was exhibited by Brady Car-ney, Georgia. This daughter of LFC6 Buzzer Beater 62-5 is powerful, big chested, soft middle and has all the muscle you will ever need in a female. She sold to Earl L. Cain and Family, Iowa, for $550.Luke Prill was up next with a daughter of SNKP6 Ray Ban 231-4 that won class 7. This lady is correct on the pro-fi le, extended ahead of her blades and had a great hip and rear leg. She sold to Holt Showpigs, Florida, for $1,000.Landon Walker Marshall, Virginia, drove his daughter of RWG6 Gas Money 112-1 in the ring next; she won the youngest class of the day. Here is a really complete gilt that offers a lot of fl ex-ibility. She sold to Chad Day, Indiana, for $725.All in all, this was a great Yorkshire show at the Winter Type Conference. This event takes a lot of work from different people who are behind the scenes, and I thank them. Kevin Wendt, great job as always – it is always a pleasure to work with you.
