In eighth grade, he sat me down for the fi rst time to look at what classes I could take for my freshman year. My eye landed on a small box labeled “Agriculture” with four classes within it. I asked my counselor what we did in those classes, and he responded with, “I think all you do is plant plants all day.” At the time, I had NO agricultural background. Through FFA, I uncovered that many of my family members had been heavily involved in the industry, some family working in the fi elds as migrant workers and my uncle owning a pretty successful grape management company in my hometown. What do you look foward to while serving as the Nationl FFA President ? I often relish in the opportunity I have before me. I am so very blessed and could have never dreamed my FFA career would lead me here. What I look forward to the most in this opportunity to serve as the National FFA President is putting my aspirations of educating students and teachers into action. On the opposite side of the coin, I hope to listen to some really inspiring agricultural related and life related stories from members and communities that I can share with the folks of National FFA.2017-2018 National FFA President Breanna HolbertWhat’s a piece of advice you would give to women wanting to be involved in FFA or agriculture in general? It is apparent that a signifi cant amount of agriculturalists are men. Even the other day, one of my teammates assumed a CEO of an agricultural company we were visiting was a man before even asking whether or not it was. Coming from a pretty diverse college, I was taken back by this assumption. I wasn’t use to that. Even though the population of female farmers has risen 2 percent, there is a need for a rapid infl ux in this number across the industry. My advice to women looking to get involved in FFA or agriculture is the same I would give to any member, male or female, black or white, rural or urban, fi nancially stable or in instable fi nancial situations is this; there is no limit to what we can accomplish. The only barrier to our success is ourselves. Confi dence is key, and in order for myself to feel confi dent, I need to feel knowledgeable, prepared, and passionate about the industry I wish to serve. Study up, search for experiences, talk to someone in the industry and the fi eld you wish to enter, and make an intentional decision to immerse yourself in agriculture. Then, and only then, can we make confi dent steps toward successful and self-tailored futures that make an impact on the world.California native, Breanna Holbert is currenlty a sophomore at California State University studying agricultural sci-ence and education. Holbert’s supervised agricultural experience projects included raising poultry for meat and eggs, landscaping and management, composting and sustainable agriculture. She was very active in fl oricutlure judging, as well as public speaking contests. During her time as a California State Offi cer, Holbert was a counselor for two summers at Camp Full Belly Farm. Holbert helped the camp maintain its mission of ensuring the public understood where their food comes from. After obtaining a master’s in agricultural education, Holbert hopes to connect and establish sustainable agricultural projects in an urban community.
