< PreviousThere are seven known types and 60 subtypes of the virus, which survives in living tissue and in the breath, saliva, urine and other excretions of infected animals. The virus can be spread through animals, people or materials that bring the virus into physical contact with susceptible animals. According to APHIS’s, FMD is one of the most diffi cult animal diseases to control because it occurs in many parts of the world, such as Africa, South America, Asia and some parts of Europe, there is always a chance of it being spread to the U.S. The FMD Info website advises livestock producers to focus on enhancing their biosecurity efforts. Be aware who is on your farm, ranch or property and prevent visits from those who have been outside the U.S. within the past two weeks. Animal Plant Heath Inspection Service manages a vaccine bank on Plum Island, New York, where vaccine antigen concentrate for a limited number of FMD strains are stored. The U.S. only has enough access of the vaccine to handle a very small, localized outbreak. In the case of an outbreak, the antigen would need to be shipped over to England or France to be turned into the fi nished product, and then shipped back because the U.S. government doesn’t allow the antigen to be brought on the mainland. The turnaround time for this process to combat a small outbreak is weeks and for a larger one would be months. The antigen concentrate has a limited shelf life, which is 12 months, and the vaccines must also be matched to the specifi c type and subtype of the virus causing the outbreak. “When there is an outbreak, the state is going to set up their control area,” Dr. Webb says. “The speed and the amount of vaccine we are going to get, you would really only be able to apply it to that area or a couple of areas depending on the number of animals they have. The bank that we share with Canada and Mexico, we have to send that antigen concentrate over to get it turned into vaccine for it to come back. There is a time delay. The more time that you don’t have the tool is the more opportunity for the disease to spread. It wouldn’t be suffi cient to cover just what we would need for Iowa.”It’s claimed the result of an outbreak would put producers out of business, export markets would closed and casue a fall in prices for meat. Iowa State University economist Dermot Hayes told High Plains/Midwest Ag Journal, based on his research, a FMD outbreak would result in a loss of over $200 billion in the beef, pork, corn, soybean, and poultry industries over a 10-year period. Farmers in the corn and soybean sectors would experience a $44 billion and nearly $25 billion lose respectively. “If we weren’t able to do what we need to do, we would have to utilize the current vaccine bank to the best of our abilities if we had an outbreak and rely on other disease control measures to contain the disease,” Dr. Webb says. “It would provide a challenge because it just removes a tool. The tool is still in the toolbox but if I need a half inch crescent wrench and I have a quarter inch then that’s the problem. The tool is insuffi cient to do the job.” The U.S. has had nine outbreaks, the fi rst in the New England states in 1870. The last happened in 1929 in California. According to a 2001 Los Angeles Times article published after the European outbreak that year, more than 3,500 farm animals were slaughtered to stop the disease spread. The more devastating disaster happened in 1924 when nearly 110,000 farm animals were infected. The disease had infected more than 22,000 deer suspected of carrying the virus. The excitement level was high all week and just continued to build as the week wore on. An extremely high-quality set of hogs were in attendance this year all the way from the weanling sift and sale throughout the open show and sale. The Duroc show was very capably sorted by Todd Beyers, Texas. No stranger to working national events for the NSR, Todd was very consistent in tying to hogs that were functional, correct and basic, yet still reaching out for ones that could make change and progress for the breed. He was assisted by brother Brett Beyers, Illinois, and he’s a gentleman that sure doesn’t need much introduction to our industry. His ability to make the red breed better is well known across the country. Thanks, guys! Great job!We started the Duroc sale with the presentation of this year’s Premier and Reserve Premier Sire awards. The Premier Sire award was presented to Hi Point Genetics, Illinois, on offspring of RYNK4 War Paint 1-4. Congratulations to the Hi Point crew. This year’s Reserve Premier Sire was awarded to Premium Blend Genetics, Indiana, on the offspring of TRES6 First Class 12-2. Congratulations to the Laird Family! As always, the Duroc sale was auctioned by Col. Kevin Wendt, Ohio. Kevin is the ultimate professional and contin-ues to be one of the best in the industry, Thanks, Colonel. The Hirschfeld and Sons’, Nebraska, champion boar and winner of class 2 led off the sale. Sired by HRFD6 Out With A Bang 2-14 this young late May boar was as wide chested, big ribbed, and as correct on his feet and legs as any hog in the barn. What made him truly unique was his ability to fl ex and stride up front with his extreme width of chest. These are two things that don’t normally go hand-in-hand. This one will be available for use from his new owners, Shaffer’s Gold Rush, Indiana. At $4,750, Terry and his family made a great buy here. The Reserve Champion Duroc Boar was consigned by Norman Brothers and Ripberger, Illinois. The win-ner of class 3, this guy was sired by RYNK4 War Paint 1-4. This young boar was fl awless in his skeleton with extra extension of front end. A big, square top and heaviness of skeleton just added to his value. He got a really good home and will be staying in Oklahoma with Ted and Pat Herber for $1,300. Good job, Ted!Next up was Brent Bolen’s son of HP6 He Is What He Is 63-2. After winning the youngest class on show day, this one would prove to be quite popular on sale day. Just a June boar, this one was way out there. Absolutely freak-ishly heavy structured, this one was still really fl exible and comfortable on the move. Combine those things with an attractive look, and a really square build, you get one that can make some changes. When Col. Wendt sold out, the new owners were Crossroads Genetics, Indiana. He was the top-selling boar at $66,000, thanks to the Beck Family and Robin Ridge, Indiana, for this purchase. Give them a call! The second Norman Brothers and Ripberger entry was up next. Sired by the record-selling RWWF6 Atten-tion 37-1 and out of the Fordice Challenger sow that is in so many pedigrees in the breed right now, this class 5 winner had lots of friends. This one was an absolute he-man of a red boar. He was immense ribbed and bladed, huge feet with big, square toes and a massive top and hip. When this guy came right at you, you knew he was a boar! The second top-selling boar of the day, he also went to Indiana with Purple Power at $38,000. Thanks to the Danner Family. Here’s another one that needs sampled. The next one in was the David Martin Family, Iowa, entry that was the winner of class 4. Sired by SDF5 Mr. Right 60-7, this was maybe the best looking, well bal-anced boar of the class winners. He was a tall shoul-dered, long fronted guy, that still had really good shape up high with a big chest fl oor and tremendous feet and legs. Crossroads Genetics made maybe the buy of the day here. Their second purchase of the sale for $2,250 should prove to be money wisely spent.Newcomers to the national scene, Nathen and Grace Lambert, Oklahoma, had the winner of class 6. This son of TRES6 First Class 12-2 was an extra heavy structured boar that had great extension of skeleton, and was still able to combine that with extra feature and balance. He’s headed west to the Texas panhandle with Walser Farms. At $1,500, Weldon will know how to utilize this one. There were several other good boars in the sale. The Cain Kids, Iowa entry that stood second behind the Reserve Champion was an intriguing hog. Sired by JSE6 Enterprise 23-2, this one was as massive when you got on top of him as any. Huge, square back and extreme rib shape made this one unique. Combine that with extra heaviness of structure and this one could be a changer. He got a great home In Indiana with Southern Gold Sires at $4,000. Thanks, Bill!Chuck and Ben Olsen’s champion and winner of class 2 led off the female portion of the sale. Sired by SDH6 Alcatraz 224-2, this young female was the kind that Chuck and Ben always seem to bring to our events. Strong in the basics of structure, balance, femininity, and soundness, yet still extreme in areas to push the breed forward. Square and muscular with the right muscle shape made this one popular with the crowd. When the gavel fell, she was headed to Texas with BJ and Sue Orgis at the sale’s top fi gure of $5,500. Thank you!Ted and Pat Herber had the Reserve Champion Duroc Gilt and winner of class 4. Sired by BPS6 Af-ter Life 15-11, this gilt was one of the most attrac-tive, best balanced gilts in the show. She combined structural integrity with excellent design and exten-sion of front end. She’s headed to Agra at $1,000.Nathen and Grace Lambert were back next with the JANUARY 2018 | SEEDSTOCK EDGE3318 Jan SE Form.indd 3312/14/2017 8:10:42 AMclass 6 winner and mate to their class-winning boar. Sired by the Reserve Premier sire, this one had some friends. She was unique in her ability to combine extension and heaviness of structure with an extra dose of femininity and shape. The gilt that tied for the second top-selling title sold for $4,250, she got a great home with Jim Cogburn in Texas. Jim will know what to do with her.Chasidy Gordon from Oklahoma was next with the class 5 winner. Sired by the Premier Sire, this gal was extra correct in her build with a big back and hip. Combine this with a bold rib and chest fl oor, and Larry Bellamy made a really good buy here at $250.Colby Rourke, Iowa, was next with the winner of the youngest class. Another entry sired by RYNK5 War Paint 1-4, this gilt was another extra correct, feminine hog. One of the really neat made gilts in the barn as far as front end extension combined with shape and balance. She got a great home in Eufaula, Oklahoma. with Randal and Terrell Buck. Good job, guys!Park Place Genetics’ class 3 winner was in the ring next. A daughter of SDH6 GRUS N Style 224-5, this was one of the stoutest gilts shown, yet she still had balance, sound-ness, and a big square hip laid in her. She’s going back to Indiana at a price of $250 with Kent Hahn. Great buy.The Hirschfi eld and Sons entry that was a littermate to the champion boar and stood second in the youngest class was a really unique female. Very similar to her mate in how busted open she was coming and going, yet still freakishly fl exible for the amount of width and product she combined. She was one of the second top-selling gilts at $4,250 and is headed to Texas with James Holt. There were several more gilts that commanded top dollar, but space limits me from talking about them all. I would encourage you to read the sale results and learn more about them. Before I fi nish this report, if I didn’t give a big shout out to the Oklahoma State Swine Club for all their help during the pig sift on Thursday and the open show on Friday, I’d be in big trouble! Great job, and GO POKES! Thanks also to Billy Cheatwood and the great group of youngsters that assist us every year during the weanling sift and sale. Last but certainly not least, to the Iowa men and ladies (Kim Lewis), your help every year in the cross boar show is so valuable. Great job as always! We hope everyone had a safe trip home and got the crops all out. Let’s do it again next year. I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Kevin Wendt, Ohio, was asked to be the judge for the Hampshire portion of the day, and as always Kevin did a great job lining up the hogs and explaining his reasons to the crowd. We appreciate Kevin for taking the time to judge and for doing such a quality job. This year, the Premier Sire for the Hampshire breed went to JSE6 Trump Card 118-2 owned by West Texas Boar Stud, Texas, and Steve and Derek Earnhart, Indiana. This boar was purchaced from Earnhart by Russ and has really gathered a great deal of interest among breeders coast to coast. The Reserve Premier Sire award goes to CFLK6 TCG Stranded 5-1 this boar was raised by Cook Family Livestock, Idiana, and owned by Top Cut Gentics, Indiana, and Kilmer Swine Farm, Indiana. I know Stranded is one of the key Hampshire sires currently at Top Cut, and I’m sure we will continue to hear great things from him.The Champion Hampshire Boar this year was exhibited by George and Mike Watson, Indiana, Mike drove a son of JGR5 Lethal 58-7 to championship honors on Friday. This boar goes back to a CPTS2 Game On 13-8 sow that is starting to make a name for herself in the Watson herd. The Watson boar was the kind of hog that is very hard to pick a hole in. He’s very functional in his framework, and he hits the surface with a good set to his knee and front foot. Plus his hind leg reached back and allowed for plenty of fl ex and cushion to his step. Then when he came at you, he was square at his chest, powerful about his blade and fore rib, and his upper rib boldness allowed him to work plenty of muscle and power up high, all while having a good look from the side. This is the kind of boar that can cover a lot of different types of sows and make breed improvement. Be sure to check him out at Southern Gold Sires, Indiana. The Reserve Champion Hampshire Boar comes from the fi rm of Earl L Cain and Family, Iowa, with a son of BJKE5 GRUS Fugitive 2-1. We all know the success the Cain crew has been able to have with Fugitive and that line of hogs in recent years, and this boar is no excep-tion to that. The dam side of this particular boar is a EC4 Mossy Oak 82-2, which has really been a cornerstone in the Cain program. Earl’s boar hit me as a dense kind of power boar with a stout breeding boar skull and feature. His forearm was big and bold, his chest width and boldness of blade was second to none and this boar had all the shape and power you would want up high. Tie that together with a good set of feet and legs and I’m sure that Jared Glunt, Indiana, will be able to make some progress with his new herd boar purchase.Grimm Purebreds, Iowa, drove the class 1 winner, a son of JSE6 Black Magic 55-1 x BEB3 Tiger 9-6. The mother of Jim’s boar happens to be a littermate to Lethals’s mother, and this line of hogs is sure making an impact on the Hamp breed right now. To me this boar looked like another Hampshire breeding boar that could do a lot of people some good. Extra stout about his skeleton, with a good look from the side. He was impres-sive up high with a Hampshire muscle and power. Be sure to check him out at Purple Power Boar Stud, Indi-ana, when it comes time to make breeding decisions. The high-selling boar this year was in the sale ring next from Steve and Derek Earnhart, Indiana. Their son of the Premier Sire, JSE6 Trump Card 118-2, sure looked like a breeding boar to me. I call him a notch bigger in frame size, he was extended up front, tall at the point of his shoulder, but from there back carried as much muscle as you would want. His huge top worked back into a big pin set and bold hip. Really an interesting boar that will go to work for Jerry McLemore, Oklahoma. The Hampshire gilt sale at the Fall Classic continues to be one of the more popular events of the fall. This year the Champion Hampshire Gilt honors went to Taylor Gibson, Ohio. Their daughter of BEB6 Zeke 16-2 was out of the very popular JSE5 Dream Squasher 37-1 gilt that HL purchased last year at the Fall Classic. The Gibson gilt represented what a good Hamp female is. Her basic build and structural integrity were second to none, and her bulk and body looked like what a female at this stage of the game needs. I couldn’t get over her feminine qualities and underline texture. Plus, her look up front read to me like a quality brood sow in the making. Good luck to Schenken Genetics, Texas, with their purchase.Breanna Mortensen, Michigan, brought the Reserve Champion Hampshire Gilt to Duncan. Brad drove a daughter of MMB5 TRIPLE THREAT 13-3. This gilt looked like another one anyone could build around. Her bal-ance and build from the side caught my attention, she was super extended ahead of her shoulder with an attractive head. The interesting part was her ability to be big bladed, bold bodied and work an athletic hip and hindleg. Aiyana Frantz, Kansas, will put her to work, congrats to the Mortensen crew on another champion.Austin Joostberns, Michigan, brought the class 2 win-ner to us, Austin’s daughter of NAJO6 IR 6-5 x OTTN3 West Point 60-3 was bred in the purple. This pedigree ties together all the hogs that have made an impact, not only at the Joostberns place but also for fi rms across the country. This was another gilt that hit the ring with an up headed, attractive look, she was so proportional from the side, her bone, feminine face and neck matched her quality underline. From here she was still stout at her forearm and had the kind of rib shape a muscle a gilt needs at this stage of the game. Congrats on driving another high-quality gilt.I call the Hampshire Sale a great success again this year, the number of gilts that were offered for sale and traded ownership was a very high percentage, and that shows the demand for these females. Thank you again to the OSU Swine Club for helping out in the show ring on Friday, as well as Col. Kevin Wendt, Ohio, for auctioneer-ing and all the crew that assisted with the show and sale.Blaine Evans | blaine@nationalswine.comNSR Field RepresentativeFrom the FieldJANUARY 2018 | SEEDSTOCK EDGE3718 Jan SE Form.indd 3712/14/2017 8:10:47 AMHampshire Boar Show Results BOARS CLASS 1 HampshirePlaceLot No.ExhibitorENSireDam's SireBuyerSale Price18-2Grimm Purebreds, IA32-9JSE6 BLACK MAGIC 55-1BEB3 TIGER 9-6Purple Power Boar Stud, IN$3,0002162-1Cook Family Livestock, IN31-2CFLK6 TCG STRANDED 5-1CFLK3 NO DEBATE 14-5No Sale359-1Randy Wirt & Family, SD68-4RWF5 POINT MAKER 1-6RASM3 PEACHES 6-3No Sale4217-5John Graber & Family, OH15-2SRF4 SGLD THE REVEREND 6-7LLG4 LOCKSMITH 31-3No Sale54-3Drake Purebred Farms, IN208-5TBRO5 BUSCH LEAGUE 139-2DPF2 MY TURN 9-2Kerby Knaupp, TX$1,000BOARS CLASS 2 HampshirePlaceLot No.ExhibitorENSireDam's SireBuyerSale Price118-1George & Mike Watson, IN21-8JGR5 LETHAL 58-7CPTS2 GAME ON 13-8Southern Gold, IN$3,000224-1Steve&derek Earnhart Families, IN87-1JSE6 TRUMP CARD 118-2JSE5 DREAM SQUASHER 37-1Jerry Mc Lemore, OK$9,500324-2Steve&derek Earnhart Families, IN94-1JSE6 TRUMP CARD 118-2BOLN3 POINT MAKER 72-7 No Sale480-1Dotson Hampshires, MO14-1BOLN5 CARRIED AWAY 14-6DOT4 RUSSEL 40-3No Sale513-1Kyle & Laura Baade, NE89-1RDW6 NOTHIN BUT NET 2-1BOLN4 MAN AMONGST BOYS 23-3Sandy River Show Swine, OR$1,3006210-2Bowen Hamps & Yorks, IL25-6EC5 SCORE 9-5JLM1 TCG AUGUSTA 7-1Karl Kay & Wade Fausett, UT$400BOARS CLASS 3 HampshirePlaceLot No.ExhibitorENSireDam's SireBuyerSale Price15-2Earl L Cain & Family, IA94-2BJKE5 GRUS FUGITIVE 2-1EC4 MOSSY OAK 82-2Jared Glunt, IN$1,500230-5Isla Grande Farms/john Graber, OH45-7TPSP5 BELIEVE THE HYPE 69-1IGJG3 POINT MAKER 42-1Kyle & Laura Baade, NE$4,0003133-1Scott & Jayme Sieren, IA157-5CFLK6 TCG STRANDED 5-1GMW2 SPEECHLESS 14-6 No Sale45-1Earl L Cain & Family, IA90-3EC6 THUNDERBOLT 23-1FSF3 CLYDESDALE 12-2Charles Real, TX$3,7505106-1Devin Goehring, WI23-6BOLN6 CARRY ON 14-1CFLK3 NO DEBATE 14-5Dale Partin, TX$600Hampshire Gilt Show Results OPEN GILTS CLASS 1 HampshirePlaceLot No.ExhibitorENSireDam's SireBuyerSale Price191-1Taylor Gibson, OH13-7BEB6 ZEKE 16-2JSE5 DREAM SQUASHER 37-1Schenken Genetics, TX$3,250224-4Steve&derek Earnhart Families, IN100-7JSE6 TRUMP CARD 118-2BOLN3 POINT MAKER 72-7Jerry Mc Lemore, OK$5,75034-2Drake Purebred Farms, IN208-10TBRO5 BUSCH LEAGUE 139-2DPF2 MY TURN 9-2Jerry Sheppard, TX$3254240-3Cody & Samantha Smith, IN7-7CODS5 SCORE BOARD 12-1CFLK4 TCG EXILE 1-1Kelsey Fehrle, TX$3505245-3Tegan Walker, IN46-4JGR3 REACH 1-10JL1 HES A TEN 10-10No Sale7210-3Bowen Hamps & Yorks, IL30-2CDO5 LOCKSMITH 224-2BOLN3 POINT MAKER 71-2Karl Kay & Wade Fausett, UT$250OPEN GILTS CLASS 2 HampshirePlaceLot No.ExhibitorENSireDam's SireBuyerSale Price1107-2Austin Joostberns, MI18-5NAJO6 IR 6-5OTTN3 WEST POINT 60-3Kelsey Fehrle, TX$600256-2Arkfeld Genetics, NE26-61ARK5 BILLY BAD 21-8FNKA3 WILD TURKEY 2-2No Sale313-2Kyle & Laura Baade, NE89-3RDW6 NOTHIN BUT NET 2-1BOLN4 MAN AMONGST BOYS 23-3Lockman Genetics, KS$300424-5Steve&derek Earnhart Families, IN90-1JSE6 TRUMP CARD 118-2JSE4 ANTE UP 50-2Doege Show Pigs, TX$500513-3Kyle & Laura Baade, NE67-4RDW6 NOTHIN BUT NET 2-1GMW4 SILENCER 9-4Bakker Brothers Genetics, IA$400655-8Lockman Genetics, KS54-4EC6 THUNDERSTRUCK CLONE 6-5 BOLN1 POINT MAKER 118-3 No Sale7245-1Tegan Walker, IN45-3JGR3 REACH 1-10CFLK3 NO DEBATE 14-5Jim & Mike Mccoy, OH$2508210-1Bowen Hamps & Yorks, IL25-1EC5 SCORE 9-5JLM1 TCG AUGUSTA 7-1Karl Kay & Wade Fausett, UT$250980-4Dotson Hampshires, MO14-6BOLN5 CARRIED AWAY 14-6DOT4 RUSSEL 40-3Wetovick Swine Farm, NE$2501080-2Dotson Hampshires, MO14-2BOLN5 CARRIED AWAY 14-6DOT4 RUSSEL 40-3Jerry Sheppard, TX$250OPEN GILTS CLASS 3 HampshirePlaceLot No.ExhibitorENSireDam's SireBuyerSale Price185-1Brenna Mortensen, MI19-2MMB5 TRIPLE THREAT 13-3KORB4 ALL EYES 23-7Aiyana Frantz, KS$1,7002240-2Cody & Samantha Smith, IN6-6JGR5 LETHAL 58-7BOLN4 MAN AMONGST BOYS 23-3Jim & Mike Mccoy, OH$1,150330-6Isla Grande Farms/john Graber, OH45-3TPSP5 BELIEVE THE HYPE 69-1IGJG3 POINT MAKER 42-1David Phillips, OK$6504131-3Rourke Sisters, IA80-3TREF5 HERES THE DEAL 28-8JKG5 BOOTED OUT 14-1Kyle Schwerdtteger, OK$1,500555-7Lockman Genetics, KS48-3LLG5 HAYMAKER 13-4HH2 HAMP STAMP 115-2Bj & Sue Orgis, TX$30074-1Drake Purebred Farms, IN205-7TBRO5 BUSCH LEAGUE 139-2DWGR3 LONG TIME COMING 3-1Jim & Mike Mccoy, OH$2,7508159-1Brigham William Bunt, OK1-3KORB4 ALL EYES 23-7GMW3 FLAT BILL 1-3Chris Patrick, IN$1,000JANUARY 2018 | SEEDSTOCK EDGE3818 Jan SE Form.indd 3812/14/2017 8:10:47 AMThanks to Lean Value Sires, Ohio, for their purchase! To support the National Junior Swine Association, Don R.
