Temperatures reached the mid 80’s on Friday. York-shires fi nished the purebred portion of the show this year. Dr. Mark Hoge, Illinois, stepped into the ring for a second year in a row, and he was assisted by Nathan Weisinger, Iowa. These gentlemen did a great job of sorting through the set of hogs that made the trip south. THANK YOU, Dr. Hoge and Mr. Weisinger for taking time out of your schedules to make the trip and line up a sale order for us.The Premier Sire of the 2017 Fall Classic was OTTN6 El Dorado 154-6 owned by Hi Point Genetics, Il-linois. The Reserve Premier Sire is RWG6 Gas Money 112-1 owned by Upperhand Genetics, Indiana.Congratulations to Kaisley Onan, Oklahoma, for driving her April 1 son of OSU5 Under Control 2-5 to champion honors at the 2017 Fall Classic. If you are looking for a boar that will potentially add height of shoulder and length of front, then this guy is for you. This guy is great from a profi le, he has a lot of the pieces I hear talked about in the barrow world. He is fl exible in his hip and takes a long stride off both ends of his skeleton. If you need a shot of size and extension in your program, call Purple Power Boar Stud, Indiana; they paid $2,500 to load this champion on their trailer.Next in the ring was the crew from Torpedo Farms Swine Genetics, Colorado. Nick drove a son of CDO3 Bruno 273-8 to Reserve Champion Yorkshire Boar hon-ors at this year’s show. Dr. Hoge described this one as being incredibly complete with some extras. This guy is good in so many areas and really hard to pick a hole in. He is the type of hog that may not move you radi-cally in any direction but will leave a ton of productive functional daughters to work with. He sold at a bargain price of $600 to Chuck Real of Real Hog Farms, Texas.Torpedo Farms Swine Genetics also won class 1 in the boar show. This one is sired by CDO3 Bruno 273-8. This guy was stout skulled, big bladed and big and bold in his rib. He was a big topped boar that had great scan fi gures. The kind of boar that helps improve a sow herd. Kuhlow Girls Showpigs, Wisconsin, were next in the ring with a son of LUPI5 Brick 123-2 than won class 3. If you need a boar to add muscle this guy is for you. He scanned an 11.4 loin eye, plus he has a great look and is sound. He sold to Wade Miller, Oklahoma, for $600.The next boar to sell was the entry from Scott Stauffer, Ohio. He placed second in class 3. This son of RWG6 Gas Money 112-1 was heavy structured, cor-rect on his pasterns and fl exible in his spine. This guy was square and correct on both ends of his skeleton and should help add a shot of frame, if you need that in your herd. He sold to Lean Value Sires, Ohio, for $3,500 making him the high-selling Yorkshire boar.We were down on numbers in Yorkshire gilt show this year, but the ladies that showed up were still in high demand. Ricker Yorkshires, Ohio, drove a daughter of RIY6 Hands Up 11-3 to capture the champion banner. Kevin’s gilt looked like what you would expect from his program. Fem-inine, extended, great skeleton, sound and functional. This lady has a shot of extra bone, she is square and correct in her chest fl oor and knee. She has a great underline, good sized vulva and all the muscle needed to make a Yorkshire sow. She sold to the Miller Family, Indiana, for $5,500.Platt Showpigs, Indiana, drove the Reserve Cham-pion Yorkshire Gilt this year. She is a daughter of WIU5 Public Safety 18-1, and let me say, she is correct. She is great in her design, tall at the point of her shoulder, level made, square on her feet and legs. Just a really correctly balanced gilt that is powerful in her muscle. She sold to Brian Reznicek, Texas, for $1,400.Philip Schmidgall, Illinois, was up next with his class 1 winning entry sire by OTTN6 El Do-rado 154-6. This is one feminine designed lady. Tall fronted, long necked, refi ned about her head. Plus, she’s long bodied and level made. She will go to work for Hot Rod Genetics, Texas, for $1,300.The class 3 winning entry was exhibited by Hahn Genetics, Indiana. Kent’s gilt is sired by SS5 High Country 41-4. She is a square built and wide centered, and has plenty of muscle. She is great designed lady from the profi le and with her pedigree she should be able to make an impact for Copper Phillips, Okla-homa, who paid $1,600 to load her on his trailer. All in all this was a good Yorkshire Show at the Fall Classic. Yorkshire breeders, we have some work to do as we move forward, but I have no doubt that this group of dedicated breeders is up for the challenge. This event takes a lot of work from different people who are behind the scenes, and I thank them. Ron Kreis, great job as always – thank you for all your help along the way. I also want to give a HUGE THANK YOU to the crew from the OSU Swine Club, you guys did an amaz-ing job helping throughout the week, my hat is off to you for your efforts!! We will see you down the road.Michael Lackey | michael@nationalswine.comNSR Field RepresentativeFrom the FieldJANUARY 2018 | SEEDSTOCK EDGE4118 Jan SE Form.indd 4112/14/2017 8:10:54 AMYorkshire Boar It was standing room only ring side as class 1 made their way to the ring. George Cooper, Oklahoma, had the duty of sorting through the crossbred show for a second time, and he was assisted by Ashley Flaspohler. As ex-pected they did a great job lining up the sale order.Ron Kreis, Ohio, was on duty to sell this set of crossbred hogs. It is always enjoyable to work with Ron, thank you for a great job. This year’s champion was a son of Blurred Vision and exhibited by Robinson Genetics, Oklahoma. This guy was fl awless from the side, extended up front, tall shouldered, level and loose in his spine and square in his upper hip. Here is a big bladed hog that is correct in his chest and knee and backed by a winning pedigree. He sold for $11,500 to Josh Robinson, Oklahoma.Glenn Craft, Oklahoma, made his way to the ring next with his son of Blurred Vision. If you want to in-clude the Blurred Vision line in your program and like power this guy was for you. Big bladed, big ribbed, soft middled, with a big back and hip. He is still tall shouldered and has a great look from side. He sold to Shaffer’s Gold Rush, Indiana, for $13,000.Next in the ring was the entry from 4K Farms, Iowa. Kirk and Daniel don’t bring many hogs out to be shown at our events but when they do you had better look in! Their son of Wide Open struck me as the breeding hog of the cross-bred show. If you want to add bone, increase foot size and still maintain functional production traits, this guy needs to be considered. 4K Farms is known for producing hogs that make the next generation better, and this guy should only add to their legacy. He is sound, has great toe qual-ity, is big and open in his blade and round in his rib. This JANUARY 2018 | SEEDSTOCK EDGE4418 Jan SE Form.indd 4412/14/2017 8:11:01 AMguy is fl exible in his spine and athletic in his movement. No fl uff and fi t on him! Thompson Brothers and Genetic Force, Ohio, did a great job buying this guy for $17,000.Palmer Show Team, Oklahoma, drove their Feed Your Addiction son to the ring. He had several friends in the barn. This guy was sound as a cat, and he never took a bad step. All the angles in his skeleton are correct! He looks like a show barrow from the side, he is a big bladed hog that has all the power needed to make the next genera-tion better. He sold to Foote Farms, Texas, for $25,000.Shepard and McPeak, Oklahoma, drove their win-ning entry from class 7 to the ring next. Their son of Slug is moderate in his size, heavy muscled, good looking, and BIG legged. He will make his way to Kansas and go to work for Reiss Livestock for the price of $8,000.Malone Showpigs, Illinois, was in the ring next with a son of Bluegrass. This traditionally marked blue boar is really correct. He is a bigger power hog that has muscle to burn. He is correct on his feet and legs and should make the next generation bet-ter. He sold to Genetic Force, Ohio, for $2,750.Next up was Seth Keplinger, Ohio, with his popular son of Blue it Up. If you like blue belted hogs that are great designed and big legged then this guy is your kind. The tall shouldered boar is great looking, extended upfront, fl exible in his spine and has the ability to push and drive off his rear two. He sold to Adam Beck and Family, Indiana, for $45,000 making him the high seller in the crossbred show. Again a HUGE THANK YOU to the crew from the OSU Swine Club for helping all week long. I would also like to thank the crew of breeders from Iowa that always step up and help during the crossbred boar show. Your help is appreciated more than you know. One of the most highly attended portions of Duncan, every year the excite-ment and the energy during this events overwhelms the barns. This year we had two very talented and respected sifters from Oklahoma in Willie Kirkpatrick and Ryan Sites. This isn’t the fi rst time either have taken on the task, and we thank them for the effi cient and professional manner in which they lined up the weanlings. As always, we could not pull this event off without some great help, new this year was the Swine Club from Oklaho-ma State University. The OSU crew stepped in and played a huge role with the sift and open show. Like in years past, the Empire FFA crew were a great help during the sift and the sale. We really couldn’t do this event without them and look forward to them helping again next year. Special thanks also goes to Col. Kevin Wendt, Ohio, and Col. Ron Kreis, Ohio, for taking on Friday night’s auctioneer-ing duties. Every year, the crowd seems to grow, and we are fortunate to have a pair of auctioneers who take the task very seriously and do a professional job in selling the weanlings. We always have a great group of ringmen that assist, and once again we thank them for helping with the baby pig sale.A sale for the record books is how I would label the wean-ling portion of the Fall Classic. Averages were up this year, and we appreciate everyone who bid or bought out of the offering. The Champion Weanling Male this year came from Heimer Hampshires, Missouri, and on Friday night set a new weanling record price of $120,000. Thank you to Jesse for having faith in the sale to offer a special boar pig, and thank you to the entire crew at Moyer Genetic Edge, Ohio, for making an investment in this boar. The Reserve Weanling Male came from Seth Gilstrap, Indiana, and for a hammer price of $16,000 goes to Douglas Schaefer, Texas, congrats to Seth and good luck with your purchase Doug. The female sale sure held its own very well with an increase in the average sale price as well. Steve and Mark Gray, Oklahoma, brought the Champion Overall Weanling Fe-male, this gilt sure had everyone’s attention ring side. The blue gilt led off the sale and brought $23,000 and went to Ottenwalter Showpigs, California. The Reserve Overall Weanling Female was exhibited by Ottenwalter Showpigs, California, this light crossbred female brought $11,000 and went to Brent Bolen, Illinois.
