I’ve always felt it was important to represent my fellow farmers. Being asked to serve as Director of Agriculture was something I never expected; however, I am honored to be a leader for an industry that has been so near and dear to me throughout my life. What motivated you to start your ag advocacy journey? I’ve spent years working to rebuild the trust that has been lost between the people who eat and the farmers who raise food. My most productive moments in helping bridge the gap have been one-on-one conversations that revolve around what’s most important to the person I’m talking to. Starting that genuine conversation is half the battle. Even those who you think you’ll have nothing in common with can surprise you. That’s what motivates me to continue on this journey. What was the most infl uential move you made to establish and progress your social media presence and advocacy? Honestly, setting up my account was probably the most important step I made in my social media advocacy. I ventured into the world of social media in 2008 but only Missouri Director Of AgricultureCHRIS CHINNDirector Chinn, a fi fth generation Missouri farmer was named Director of Missouri Department of Agriculture in January 2017 by Missouri Governor Eric R. Greitens. Chinn and her family reside in Clarence, Mo., and manage their farrow-to-fi nish hog operation, as well as their family feed mill. Chinn has held leadership positions in agriculture on the local, state and national level for more than 12 years. Chinn established her brand through social media and public speaking. Her blog and Twitter audiences have attracted more than 10,000 followers who have tuned in to listen to her farm story. She is a member of the Missouri Pork Association and has served on the association’s state board since 2015.on a 30 day trial basis. I was encouraged by a friend of mine to use Twitter as an outlet to tell my farm story. I’ll admit that I reluctantly agreed, knowing that once those 30 days came to a close, I’d be jumping ship immediately.Turns out, my prediction was far from the truth. I didn’t have time to tweet, but I made the time. I engaged with consumers--young and old. And I realized that people care greatly about what we as farmers do in our private lives because we are the people who grow their food. I heard just the other day that nationally only 300-500 farmers are active on social media, so it is increasingly important for us to step up and share the farm story online, or others will share it for us. What’s a piece of advice you would give to women trying to make an infl uence in the agriculture industry? The world is led by those who show up. There are countless lessons I learned and experiences that changed me, but that is my greatest takeaway. If you don’t show up, then you literally can’t make a difference, and someone else will.
